Nestmark Support

Help for Nestmark, the web highlighter. Your highlights live only on your device, so there is no account to sign in to and nothing to sync. Everything below works offline.

Getting started

Select some text on any web page.
Press Alt+H, or right-click and choose Highlight with Nestmark.
Come back to the page later: your highlight is where you left it.

The toolbar button opens a popup where you pick a style, turn on click-to-highlight (every selection is highlighted as soon as you let go of the mouse), open the sidebar, and see this page's highlights.

Keyboard shortcuts

To change or add shortcuts, open your browser's extension shortcuts page: chrome://extensions/shortcuts in Chrome, edge://extensions/shortcuts in Edge, or in Firefox about:addons, then the gear menu, then Manage Extension Shortcuts. The order of your styles (Overview, then Styles) decides which style is style 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Notes, styles and your highlights

Notes: open the sidebar (Alt+S) or the overview page and choose Add note on any highlight. Notes stay private: web pages never see them.
Styles: in the overview page, open the Styles tab to create, edit, reorder, hide or delete styles, or reset to the built-in ones.
All your highlights: the overview page lists every highlight on every page, with search, sorting and grouping. Open it from the popup's Overview button.

Backups and moving to a new computer

Nestmark keeps your highlights in your browser on this device only. They are not backed up anywhere, and uninstalling Nestmark deletes them.

Back up: in the overview page, choose Export JSON and keep the file somewhere safe.
Move to another computer or browser: export JSON on the old one, then choose Import JSON in the overview page on the new one. Importing replaces the highlights already there.
Share or read elsewhere: Export Markdown or Export CSV.

Troubleshooting

A highlight didn't come back

Nestmark finds each highlight again by its place on the page and by the words around it, so small edits to a page are fine. If the site rewrote or removed that text, the highlight can't be placed; the toolbar badge turns red when that happens. The highlight is still saved in the overview page, where you can copy it or remove it.

Nothing happens on some pages

Browsers don't let extensions run on some pages: their own settings and new-tab pages (chrome://, edge://, about:), the extension stores themselves, and the built-in PDF viewer. Nestmark also highlights only the main page, not content embedded in a frame. On any other page, try reloading it once after installing or updating Nestmark.

Highlighting files on my computer

To highlight pages opened from your disk (file:// addresses) in Chrome or Edge, open the extensions page, choose Details under Nestmark, and turn on Allow access to file URLs.

Nestmark doesn't work at all in Firefox

Open about:addons, choose Nestmark, then the Permissions tab, and make sure access to all websites is turned on. Nestmark needs it to draw your highlights.

Privacy

Nestmark collects nothing and sends nothing anywhere. Read the full privacy policy.
